Types of Freezers

Freezers offer convenience and great money savings, allowing families to take advantage of food specials at the grocery store, make meals in advance, store and save garden bounty, and prepare for special events.

Do you know the difference between the different types of freezers? They include:

  • Upright Freezers: Upright freezers offer many convenient features and a variety of storage options with adjustable and removable storage bins, shelves, and slides. While they provide 10-15% less storage capacity than chest models, they require less floor space. Uprights are a great choice for organizational junkies and those who need quick and easy access to food; however, they can be difficult to fit oddly shaped or larger items into.
  • Chest Freezers: Chest freezers are the most economical to operate, and though they take up more floor space, every inch of storage space is usable. Built-in side wall insulation helps them maintain temperature well, making them an energy-efficient choice. In the event of power loss, they can maintain temperature for 2-3 days depending on the amount of food stored within. They make it easier to store large or oddly shaped items, but require lots of bending, reaching, and re-arranging to locate necessary items.
  • Refrigerator/Freezer Combos: Though not a standalone freezer, a home's refrigerator typically comes with a small built-in freezer section as well.
